AUDUBON – No. 10-ranked IKM-Manning didn’t waste any time Tuesday evening, racing out to a 16-0 lead before enacting a running clock in the second half en route to convincing 64-38 win over Audubon.
The Wheelers found themselves in an 18-2 hole at the end of the first quarter, and didn’t break through into the scoring column until 35 seconds remained in the first when sophomore Mitchell Nelsen ended the drought with a lay-up.
Nelsen’s bucket stopped the bleeding, but just a moment later he picked up his third foul, and was put on the bench as Audubon waded through foul trouble.
By the end of the first, the Wheelers had already committed seven team fouls, and it didn’t take IKMM long to get into the double bonus as they fed an ever-growing lead.
The Wolves put up 18 points in each of the first three frames, and led 54-19 heading into the fourth quarter.
Ten different IKMM players would find their way on to the score sheet Tuesday, and three would finish in double figures, led by Cody Eisheid’s game-high 14 points. Ridge Muhlbauer and Kyle Wagner both finished with a dozen points for the Wolves.
Despite a poor showing at the free throw line (10-of-22), the Wolves shot especially well from the floor, hitting 25 of 43 field goal attempts
Audubon was led in scoring by sophomore Lake Hacker, who finished with 13 points for the Wheelers.
In the fourth quarter, though the game was already out of hand, the Wheelers started to play a bit more loosely, and would outscore IKMM 19-10 in the final quarter.
With the victory, IKM-Manning improves its season record to 8-0 (7-0 in WIC), and they currently hold a one-game lead over Treynor (7-1/6-1) for first place in the Western Iowa Conference.
Audubon returns to the court Friday with another stiff test of Western Iowa Conference basketball. Treynor, winners of five straight, will host the Wheelers.
