Boyer Valley escapes with 47-44 victory over Exira-EHK

ELK HORN – Offense was hard to come by Tuesday night in Elk
Horn, but at the end of four quarters, visiting Boyer Valley proved to have
just enough to lift the Bulldogs past Exira-EHK 47-44 in Rolling Valley
Conference action.
Exira-EHK led 15-13 after one quarter and 21-18 at the half
before Boyer Valley jumped out ahead in the third quarter for good, and forced
the Spartans to play from behind.
“I don’t know if we let it slip away, but it’s one that we
probably should and could have got,” Spartans coach Doug Newton says. “We just
couldn’t get that fourth quarter lead that would put us in the drivers’ seat
and force them into taking some chances. They had to earn it, that’s for sure.”
Tuesday’s matchup was the second meeting this season between
the two squads, with BV prevailing (53-42) during the first game of the season
back on Dec. 3. After the win Tuesday in Elk Horn, the Bulldogs earn the season
sweep over their conference-mates.
Boyer Valley waited until the final minute of the third
quarter to savor its first lead when Kyle Behrendt hit two of two free throw
attempts with 33 seconds left in the frame to push the Bulldogs ahead 33-31.
In the fourth, BV would score first two field goals in quick
succession (expanding the lead to 37-31), and Exira-EHK would try to play
catch-up the rest of the way.
The final six minutes proved to be a grind, but the host
Spartans were not able to turn the tide.
Exira-EHK’s Drew Peppers led all scorers with 15 points, and
BV’s Jared Frazier finished with 11 points as the only two in double figures on
this night.
Boyer Valley improves its record to 7-4, both overall and in
the conference. The Bulldogs have now won two straight and remain in the top
half of the RVC as one of five teams that have a somewhat reasonable chance of
chasing down first-place Ar-We-Va (9-0).
For the Spartans, the struggles continue for a team that has
been ultimately competitive, but have lagged behind in terms of wins and
losses. Exira-EHK falls to 2-9 with Tuesday’s loss.
“The guys are hungry, we are improving everywhere but the
win column,” coach Newton says. “You have to figure there are a few (wins) out
there for us if we continue to play with the same kind of effort. If every team
I’ve ever had played as hard as this team does, than I’d have a few more career
wins, that’s for sure. Hats off, because these guys play their guts out every
night, and they keep coming up with the short end of the stick.”
